History of Capitol Hill

Historic Capitol Hill is located just south Downtown OKC bordering the Oklahoma River. Once slated to be the Capitol of Oklahoma, then maintaining sovereignty, and finally annexed to Oklahoma City with a dowry of $12,000, a rich history is embedded in the District’s past.

Years ago the Capitol Hill district was a thriving, bustling, commercial district and represented a sense of pride for the South side of Oklahoma City. Years of decay followed and the district ceased to be the paragon it once was. Capitol Hill Main Street, established in 1997, provided a foundation of economic development, promotion, design and organization that is restoring Capitol Hill to its former glory. Not only is Capitol Hill experiencing a rebirth of its history, but that history is now enhanced with a multi-cultural diversity. Since 1997, the district has garnered $14.8 million in public and private reinvestment.

Several Main Street projects are surfacing and gaining momentum. Our Fiestas de las Americas broke attendance records and was awarded “Premier Special Event” at the 2008 Oklahoma Main Street Awards Banquet. Our “Plaza Project” is in its planning stages but promises to be a stellar community building effort and local attraction. The Business Improvement District initiative was passed this year and its implementation next year will ensure continued promotion and revitalization.
